Bio
Newell A Woodworth was the 8th and final child of Albigence Woodworth. Newell had several half brothers and sisters that were much older than him. When he was born on June 1, 1845, the ages of his siblings born to his dad's first wife were as follows: Ezra was 31, Luther and Al were 30, Ruben was 24, Laura was 22, and Sarah was 20. They were all old enough to be his parent!

Newell's mother (born Elizabeth Wheadon, a British woman) had been married before to a man named William Allen. She and William came to the U.S. and settled in good old Williamsfield, Ohio. Their child George Palmer Allen was only 4 when his father died and was buried in Williamsfield, in 1840

So there is poor Elizabeth all alone with her son. She lives in a small town, and lucky for her, Albigence Woodworth is tired of being alone. At 54 Al is 18 years her senior, but he and Elizabeth marry in August of 1842 and little George has a family again. Al and Elizabeth waste no time and give George a little sister the following July. Two years later, Newell Allen is finally born. (Did his mom give him that middle name in remembrance of her first husband? Yikes, I hope not). Regardless, it seems Al is done having children and perhaps even favors this final child, much like a grandfather might.

So while he is the baby of a large family, Newell has a sister and brother to play with on the family farm. His eldest brother Ezra lived with them all and helped work the farm while the rest of the siblings grew up and moved out. Ezra and Newell stay on and help dad run the farm.

in 1870 Newell had some land of his own and a wife and two kids, but he and his family are living with his father and mother, along with older brother Ezra and two other relatives. All the occupants of the home, from Al at 81 down to Frank Brooks at 13 are listed as farmers. In the end, Newell's father willed to him 60 acres of land and the 140 acre family farm and all the family possessions, with the understanding that old big brother Ezra was to "have his support from said farm". I think it means, sometimes it pays to be last, as long as you take care of your older brother!
