Bio
Bertha was the second oldest daughter of Thekla and Wenzel Schrom and was the older sister of Frank Schrom. She was born on a farm in Wisconsin in 1879. She likely grew up working hard to help her mother and not going to school.

Somewhere between 1890 and 1892, the entire family moved to Rockford, Illinois where Bertha's final two brothers where born. Bertha and her younger sister Lily stayed home with mom while the boys went to school. They became the primary caregivers for their mother when she got sick around 1898 with consumption.

In 1900 Bertha's mother died and the family moved from their house on Benton Street to 513 East Street. Then in 1902 Lily dies. She is only 18. I am guessing she too had consumption as it is highly contagious and Lily was so young.

After caring for everyone, Bertha also dies in 1904. One can only guess that the cause of death for this 25 year old gal was exhaustion or consumption.
