Bio
We don't know a lot about James, son of James Ford, born about 1829 in West Dean.
We know he followed in his father's footsteps and became a Gardner as an occupation. In 1871, he is 40 and listed as unmarried and living in his fathers house. The address on the census says "The Park" which likely refers to someplace around the famous West Dean Garden, where they both may have worked.
As his big brother William left the family home and moved north to pursue a career as a tradesman, we may speculate that James felt a strong need to stay close to the family. With four younger sisters to look out for, my guess is James was just too busy to find a wife!
