Bio
Vera Sweeny was the youngest child of working class Irish immigrants. Her father was a shipbuilder and like most women of the day, her mother "kept" house. The family owned a home on Bridge Street in Ohio City that is no longer standing.

He daughter tells the story that little Vera was a willful child who embarrassed her brothers by getting a job as a teenager. Girls belonged at home at this time and I believe that her older brother Bill was very motivated to find little Vera a husband. So motivated that he brought home a German kid from work to dinner one night, and the rest is history.

After her husband's death in 1961, Vera lived with her youngest daughter Mary Jo. Vera was a very dedicated Catholic woman and therefore did not approve of her daughter Margaret's divorce. I remember her as a stern woman. Her frowning face, however, was likely the result of her Parkinson's disease that eventually led to her being bedridden in a nursing home and passing away from complications thereof.
