Alanson was born in New York and moved to Iowa, like so many people, to help settle the land. He was a farmer who lost his first two children, Frank and Charles, before they were three years old. He raised Fred, Cyrus, and Martha, but his last child, a girl named Fannie, died at 3 years of age.
