Bio
Altie Viola Anderson was the daughter of Emory Anderson and Anna McLaughlin.
Emory's parents (Forgust and Jane Woodford Anderson, married 1870) were immigrants from Sweden and farmed in Kankakee IL, prior to relocating to Westport SD. Anna McLaughlin emigrated as a child from Omagh in Northern Ireland, as part of the family's chain migration (her father came first, working on building the Great Northern railroad before taking up a homestead in SD). Her mother, Mary, died at age 70 in 1914. Her siblings were Nellie (1899-1955), Carl, and Harold. Altie obtained a teaching degree from a nearby Normal School, and taught in a rural one-room schoolhouse for a year.
She then took the General Services test and obtained a job in Washington D.C. as a personnel office clerk in the Department of Defense, where she met her future husband (married in 1919 in Westport). Children: Mary Jean, Baby Boy (died shortly after birth), Edward, and Janet. In 1963, Altie moved to 992 Pennfield Rd in Cleveland Heights, living there with Janet until her passing.
